Rural Development and Modernization Project for the Eastern Region (PRODEMORO)

This project seeks to improve the levels of income and living conditions of the inhabitants of 33 municipalities in Eastern El Salvador.

Most of the beneficiaries are subsistence farmers and seasonal workers hired for the coffee and sugarcane harvests. The project will help the farmers to market their products better, and the seasonal workers to create profitable business ventures both in agriculture and in other non-agricultural sectors.

The project will show the beneficiaries how to develop viable business and marketing plans, and identify what technical assistance they need to run the businesses. Finally, the project will provide a credit fund to capitalize on these initiatives.

PRODEMORO will also support the creation and strengthening organizations of small producers and cooperatives in order to improve marketing processes and cut production, transportation and marketing phase costs.

Another of the project's key pillars is to improve natural resources management. To do so, the project will provide training, technical assistance and funding for the creation of new businesses engaging in sustainable exploitation of the environment and restoring the natural environment.

Remittances from Salvadoran migrants abroad are a major source of income in the region, which is why the project will also explore mechanisms for channelling these resources to benefit the development of migrant workers' communities of origin.
