Seeds Development Programme

This programme will cover four contiguous localities: Rahad and Sheikan in North Kordofan, and Abbassiya and Abu Gubeiha in South Kordofan. The overall goal is to improve food security, incomes and resilience to shocks among the smallholder producers in rainfed areas.

Approximately 108,000 traditional rainfed smallholder farmers, at least 30,000 of whom are women, are expected to benefit from the programme through increased returns from the use of quality certified seed. Furthermore, around 1,280 seed growers are expected to benefit directly, with preference given to experienced and dynamic young farmers.

The programme will increase agricultural productivity and provide a sound foundation for future expansion of the seed industry in Sudan. Areas of focus will include:

  • strengthening and developing the institutional and regulatory environment
  • improvement of the seed production system
  • support for seed market development
  • programme coordination and management.
