Investing in rural people in Sudan

Hero image

Sudan became a Member State of IFAD in 1977, with the first IFAD loan being approved in 1979.

Having provided uninterrupted support throughout the period when economic sanctions were in effect, at a time when most aid was directed at humanitarian assistance, IFAD is widely seen as one of the few financial institutions and development partners with a high profile in supporting agricultural and rural development in the country.

IFAD finances mainly agricultural and rural development projects in the rainfed sector, where the deterioration in natural resources and greater vulnerability to climate change have aggravated the poverty situation of smallholder producers.
