Lessons learned from IFAD’s response to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi
This brief outlines the actions taken in IFAD programme areas in the aftermath of the cyclone and the lessons learned for the future.
This document highlights the main results of the Crisis Response Initiative-funded activities in Malawi. Activities included demonstration plots, fertilizer distribution, organic fertilizer expansion, extension services, small stock pass-on schemes, seed multiplication and agroforestry. They addressed the needs people adversely affected by the impact of the war in Ukraine and Cyclone Freddy.
Innovative approaches were introduced, including the Mbeya fertilizer. This hybrid fertilizer promotes sustainable agricultural practices by improving soil fertility, enhancing moisture retention and reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers.
