How farmers across Africa are holding back desertification and land degradation

Brazil’s north-eastern semi-arid region, known as sertão, is a land rich in culture and enchanting landscapes, but the harsh climate and lack of water make it difficult to earn a living here. However, over recent decades, modern ingenuity has combined with traditional mutual aid systems to help communities make the most of the region’s natural resources.
Since 2010, the Viva o Semiarido (Long Life to Semiarid, or PVSA) project in Piauí has invested in traditional agricultural and livestock activities, improving their performance and helping small farmers diversify their production. Key to the project’s success is the focus on nature-based solutions and working with local people.
