Engaging with the Private Sector in the Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia: Learning lessons from the field

IFAD’s Near East, North Africa and Europe (NEN) Division operates across 21 countries spread across three continents. The economies, agricultural ecosystems, climates, and societies of these countries vary widely. The regions of North Africa, the Balkans, and Western and Central Asia are experiencing a rise in undernourishment and food insecurity.

The private sector is increasingly recognizing that smallholder farmers and medium-sized, small and micro enterprises offer many opportunities, but face many challenges engaging with these groups.

IFAD can act as a facilitator, building a bridge between the diverse stakeholders and providing access to high-quality produce that responds to consumers’ wish to eat wholesome produce from ethical sources.

This document offers insights into the challenges and opportunities of building public-private partnerships, and their potential to transform food systems in the region.
