Management of Livestock Using Rotational Grazing

A critical intervention to promote food security and environmental sustainability in Rural Tajikistan

Many Tajik communities use common pastures. Over the past decades, there has been a steady increase in overgrazing and degradation. The IFAD-supported Livestock and Pasture Development Programme turned this dynamic around. Rotational grazing reversed pasture degradation leading to improved livestock health and positive impacts on household food security, nutrition and income.

This publication provides a brief background on rangeland management in Tajikistan and offers key principles of rotational grazing practices that explain how and why such systems can achieve ecologically sustainable outcomes.
