How South-South and Triangular Cooperation is transforming coconut cultivation and processing in Viet Nam

All businesses, irrespective of their size, location, products, and services, depend on weather and climate. Finding and sharing solutions to climate-related challenges is at the centre of South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

The South-South Cooperation for Scaling up Climate Resilient Value Chain Initiatives (SSCVC) project, funded by the China−IFAD South-South and Triangular Cooperation Facility, is helping to identify and develop climate-resilient value chain initiatives among farmers’ groups, processing units and enterprises in Cambodia, China, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Viet Nam. Guided by successful experiences in climate-resilient value chains in these four countries, the project develops capacity and knowledge on the best practices for future use, replication and scaling up.

One such example comes from coconut cultivation and processing in Ben Tre, Viet Nam. The Ben Tre Coconut Investment Joint Stock Company (BEINCO), with the support of an IFAD-funded project, developed a public-private partnership (PPP) model to better cope with natural disasters and climate change. BEINCO has now helped households in the model area, especially women-led and low-income households, improve their ability to adapt to climate change.

Both local enterprises and farmers are benefiting from the PPP model in terms of social, economic and technical sustainability. With its relatively simple and low-cost solutions – for example, organic coconut cultivation, using mud sediments and composts – farmers are able to replicate this model in other areas.
