Kenya and IFAD to discuss results of impact evaluation and country strategy aimed at better targeting interventions and strengthening partnerships in the country

Rome, 30 November 2018 –The Independent Office of Evaluation of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Kenya are holding a one-day workshop to present the results of an independent evaluation of IFAD's country strategy and programme in Kenya. The event will also serve to discuss the findings and recommendations of a recently conducted impact evaluation of the Smallholder Marketing Programme in the country.

The workshop will present the main conclusions and recommendations of the evaluation, which analyses the past seven years of work that IFAD has undertaken together with the Kenyan government. The event will also be an opportunity to discuss how IFAD can best support Kenya by strengthening policy engagement and partnerships, involving private sector in value chains and better targeting its interventions, particularly towards youth and arid and semi-arid lands.

The workshop will bring together representatives of the Government, IFAD senior management and staff, non-governmental and civil society organizations, representatives of academia, resource organizations, and international development cooperation institutions. IFAD has invested in rural people for 40 years, empowering them to reduce poverty, increase food security, improve nutrition and strengthen resilience. Since 1978, we have provided US$20.4 billion in grants and low-interest loans to projects that have reached about 480 million people. IFAD is an international financial institution and a specialized United Nations agency based in Rome – the UN’s food and agriculture hub.

About the Independent Office of Evaluation (IOE): IOE conducts evaluations of IFAD-financed policies, strategies and operations to promote accountability and learning. The main purpose is to contribute to improving IFAD's and its partners' performance in reducing rural poverty in recipient countries. IOE's independent evaluations assess the impact of IFAD-funded activities and give an analysis of successes and shortcomings – to tell it the way it is – as well as identify factors affecting performance. Based on the key insights and recommendations drawn from evaluation findings, IOE also communicates and shares IFAD’s knowledge and experience in agriculture and rural development with a wider audience.
