Opening Statement by Gilbert Houngbo, President of IFAD, at the Nutrition for Growth (N4G) Summit

I would like to thank the Government of Japan for its foresight in hosting this global summit. At this time of climate change and pandemic, it is more important than ever that we work together to transform the way the world tackles malnutrition in all its forms. We have less than nine years to meet our SDGs commitment. We must not fail.

IFAD has stepped up its commitments to implement “last mile” interventions to address the double burden of malnutrition, i.e. under nutrition and over nutrition - along with the third factor of micronutrient deficiency.

We are fully committed to improve nutrition through better production systems that can increase availability, affordability, and consumption of diverse, safe, nutritious foods and healthy diets that feed humanity and the planet.

By taking a food-systems approach to investments in nutrition-sensitive agriculture and rural development with small-scale producers at its heart, we believe we can and will make tangible and lasting improvements to the world’s food security and nutrition.

For decades, Japan has been a key partner of IFAD, providing strategic guidance to the Fund. Our recent opening of the IFAD Liaison Office in Japan will enhance our joint effort in Japan for better food security and nutrition in the world.
