Statement by Gilbert Houngbo on appointment to ILO

Today I was elected as Director General of ILO. Like IFAD, ILO is an organization dedicated to inclusive development, equity and social justice, and ensuring that the most marginalized and vulnerable people are not left behind.

This is at the core of what I have devoted my life and career to and why today I am pleased to accept this new challenge offered to me. 

Over the last five years at IFAD, I have had the honour and privilege of working alongside committed and talented colleagues. The incredible work of the organization and everything that I have learned as IFAD President will stay with me and shape my focus and direction as I continue working for the most vulnerable populations around the world. 

The process of appointing a new President of IFAD will begin at the end of the month. I am committed to continue leading the organisation during the interim period to ensure it plays its vital role in building rural resilience.
