From low to high: Increasing productivity and purchasing power in Kenya

23 May 2019

There are more than 7.5 million smallholder farmers in Kenya, accounting for about 75 per cent of the country's total agricultural output. Until recently, most farmers in the area lacked capital to buy high quality seeds, certified fertiliser and pesticides. They also lacked information on best farming practices and post-harvest storage. Two years ago, all this changed. An e-voucher scheme was launched that supports smallholder farmers and helps them get access to capital. The European Union piloted this initiative in partnership with IFAD and targeted 25,000 farmers in western Kenya. This initiative is now being scaled up jointly by IFAD-EU and the Government of Kenya to farmers in other locations in the country.
