India: Barring Malnutrition

 

With traditional crops abandoned for lucrative cash crops, malnutrition rates can quickly rise.

But in Madhya Pradesh, India, a cooperative of women is rediscovering that forgotten millets, once a staple in the region, can offer both nutritional value and an economic opportunity.

Starting in 2014 as a very small group, the cooperative grew steadily and now involves more than 3,000 women along the whole value chain.

The nutritional supplements the cooperative produces using Kodo and Kutki millets is distributed to child-care centres across the region to help fight malnutrition.
