Gujranwala Agricultural Development Project

Gujranwala Agricultural Development Project

In Gujranwala district agricultural yields are poor and incomes well below the national rural average. A high percentage of rural households are landless. The overall objective of the project was to increase incomes and food crop production. The project worked to:

  • help women in particular take up income-raising activities
  • make credit available to the poorest groups in order to develop cottage industries
  • improve yields of wheat and rice, the main crops
  • improve water management and irrigation systems

The project helped raise literacy levels, employment opportunities and income levels, both through crop and livestock production and cottage industries. Thanks to project loans, livestock ownership grew by 100 per cent for landless participants and 175 per cent for small farmers.
