Batha Rural Development Project

Batha Rural Development Project

The project's objective is to improve incomes and food security for poor rural households in the Batha region. Agricultural productivity in the region is low. In many areas soil quality is poor and farmers have limited access to resources, especially land. There are few alternative options for income generation, and financial services are rare.

The project targets vulnerable groups in the region, including small-scale subsistence farmers practising rainfed agriculture and women and unemployed young people who are traditionally excluded from decision-making processes. Vulnerable groups, especially women and young people, have difficulty accessing resources and information to help them build a livelihood. There is a focus on improving community capabilities by forming grass-roots associations that can identify development needs and implement project activities. The project will:

  • provide financial assistance for activities to increase agricultural productivity and protect the environment
  • promote the development of a distribution system for agricultural inputs, especially seeds
  • help construct waterholes and boreholes for irrigation schemes to improve farm and home garden production
  • rehabilitate rural roads to allow access to productive zones
  • support the development of rural financial services
