Mangoky Agricultural Development Project

Mangoky Agricultural Development Project

The Mangoky Agricultural Development Project had the aim of increasing food production and improving the employment and income conditions for farmers in the south-west, one of Madagascar’s most depressed regions. It was part of a long-term development plan for the Mangoky Delta and consisted of:

  • Developing new land and the necessary irrigation systems
  • Improving existing rice plots
  • Increasing agricultural production by supplying inputs and technical services and developing applied agricultural research

The financial and institutional difficulties of the company responsible for carrying out the construction work meant that the project had a hard time getting off the ground. Instead of the anticipated 3,700 ha, only 1,500 ha could be developed and the project suffered a year’s delay.
