Southern Region Agriculture Project

Southern Region Agriculture Project

Project activities were concentrated in the eastern Equatoria and Bahr-el-Ghazal provinces of the Southern region and targeted the country’s poorest people: nomadic herders and smallholder farmers.

The goal of the project was to improve the nutrition levels and income of rural poor people by increasing production of food crops and livestock. Specific objectives were to:

  • build the institutional framework for the region’s agricultural development
  • develop cash and food crops
  • strengthen cattle ranching and improve disease control

The project was hindered by the deterioration of the security situation and the division of southern Sudan into three autonomous regions. However, notable improvements were made in the area of crop production, marketing and veterinary services.
