National Programme for Food Production in the Cooperative and Family Sector

National Programme for Food Production in the Cooperative and Family Sector

The overall goal of this programme was to help rural areas realize some of their agricultural production potential, meet food requirements and generate surplus that could be sold. It had the aims of increasing productivity in the cooperative and family sector, improving the health of the livestock population and increasing the fish catch of poor fishing communities. Programme activities centred on delivering cost-effective and innovative techniques to boost crop, livestock and fisheries production and create labour opportunities. Specific activities included:

  • distributing basic agricultural equipment and materials such as tools, implements, seeds, livestock vaccines and drugs and fishery supplies nationwide
  • providing technical assistance to ensure that equipment and materials were properly implemented
  • providing training facilities to train the agricultural technicians and cooperative members needed to assist the growing cooperative sector
