The project was designed to address difficulties experienced by the government of Lao in organizing its agricultural production structure, procuring and distributing essential inputs and creating relevant institutions.

 

The project focused primarily on increasing food grain and livestock production. It also helped support agricultural extension in five other main rice producing provinces: Savannakhet, Champassak, Khammouane, Saravane and Luang Prabang. Specific project activities included:

  • supporting small-scale irrigation works
  • developing agricultural extension services
  • rehabilitating roads 
  • developing sugar-cane production and processing
  • developing the livestock feed industry
  • providing agricultural inputs
  • training government staff to provide institutional support to farmers
