Pilot Food Crop Development Project

Pilot Food Crop Development Project

The objectives of the project were to expand the scope of the ongoing applied research programme in food crops at the Mesquita Centre and to create a decentralized extension system. To improve the incomes and nutritional status of smallholder farmers, the project provided support for agricultural services and inputs. The aim was to improve the food supply and strengthen the distribution system through staff training at the national level and adaptive research at the local level.

The project started with a study of the potential and needs of smallholder producers. Activities then focused on providing inputs and improved varieties and seeds, as well as training and assistance in the formation of microcredit associations. The project also provided technical support to small-scale producers.
