North-central Agricultural Development Project

North-Central Agricultural Development Project

The project area is among the most disadvantaged on the country. Agricultural productivity is low and rural infrastructure is lacking or inadequate. The average subsistence farm does not produce enough to feed the farmer's household adequately.

The objective of the project was to increase food production and incomes of small-scale farmers and their households by improving agricultural productivity. It provided for measures to improve the technical base and the institutional framework, as well as the way rural markets work.

  Activities included:

  • laying the foundation of an effective research and extension service
  • establishing or strengthening commercial and financial service institutions
  • supporting small rural enterprises
  • improving roads and village water supplies
  • involving participants fully in planning, financing and implementing the project
