Lessons learned from IFAD’s response to Cyclone Freddy in Malawi

The deadly Tropical Cyclone Freddy hit Malawi in March 2023 just as people were enduring a significant cholera outbreak, and hunger and food insecurity were high at the peak of the lean season. Severe rainfall and strong winds caused devastating flash floods and landslides over the eastern and southern areas of the country. Homes, infrastructure, crops and livestock were washed away.

When the cyclone hit, IFAD was supporting four ongoing programmes working across the country. IFAD focuses on long-term development interventions, and building smallholder farmers’ resilience is a keystone of our agenda.

IFAD’s established presence with partners on the ground made a quick, targeted response and prompt rehabilitation possible. This brief outlines the actions taken in IFAD programme areas in the aftermath of the cyclone and the lessons learned for the future.
