Climate-smart agriculture: A synthesis of experiences and lessons from the NEN region

Addressing climate change and transforming agri-food systems are key to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an approach to managing landscapes that addresses the interlinked challenges of food security and accelerating climate change.

This publication describes CSA case studies in Egypt, Georgia, Moldova and Somalia that look to:

• Increase productivity: Produce more and better food to improve nutrition security and boost incomes.
• Enhance resilience: Reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks and shocks, and improve capacity to adapt and grow in the face of longer-term stresses.
• Reduce emissions: Pursue lower emissions for food production, avoid deforestation from agriculture and identify ways to absorb carbon out of the atmosphere.

The case studies pay special attention to smallholder farmers, including women and indigenous groups, who are particularly affected by the impacts of climate change.
