The causes of gender discrimination pervade different aspects of our lives – social, economic, political, environmental – affecting gender roles and relations in domestic, productive and public domains and from the local to the international level. Time-bound development projects need to
address the cross-cutting and multifaceted nature of gender inequality through multiple entry points.

Las intervenciones en el sector agrícola para promover la igualdad entre los géneros y el empoderamiento de la mujer se centran principalmente en el fortalecimiento de las oportunidades económicas y la capacidad de adopción de decisiones de la mujer como agricultora o en grupo. Sin embargo, las mismas mujeres suelen quedar sin poder dentro del hogar.

Los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) se centran en un conjunto interrelacionado de cuestiones que deben abordarse para erradicar el hambre y la pobreza y garantizar un futuro en el que nadie se quede atrás. El Foro Político de Alto Nivel de este año se centra en la "Transformación hacia sociedades sostenibles y resistentes". Se revisarán en profundidad los ODS relacionados con el agua (ODS6), la energía (ODS7), los asentamientos humanos (ODS11), el consumo y la producción responsables (ODS12), la vida en la tierra (ODS15) y las asociaciones (ODS17). En ese contexto, el mundo rural -donde viven la mayoría de las personas pobres y hambrientas- merece una atención especial.

La agricultura comienza con las semillas. Sin semillas no puede haber cultivos ni producción de alimentos. Cuando las cosechas son malas o las reservas se pierden, surge la inseguridad en materia de semillas, lo que puede afectar negativamente la seguridad alimentaria y los medios de vida.

Esta Notas Prácticas (HTDN en sus siglas en inglés) en este conjunto de herramientas sobre Apoyar a los Sistemas de Semillas de Pequeños Productores aborda las complejidades de los sistemas de semillas, estableciendo un proceso para apoyar a los responsables de la toma de decisiones de las políticas agrícolas nacionales, a las agencias de desarrollo nacionales e internacionales y a los Gerentes de los Programas en los países del FIDA en el diseño y supervisión de proyectos relacionados con semillas. This publication, Lessons Learned, presents some key lessons from the experiences of IFAD and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and other seed-related development projects. These lessons will help the reader of the How To Do Note (HTDN) to have a greater understanding and appreciation of the framework for analysing national seed systems and how to use the HTDN to inform the design and implementation of more effective seed projects.

This paper challenges the traditional view that portrays income maximization as the main driver of migration and tests whether relative deprivation and social inequality lead to migration in sub-Saharan Africa. Examining data from the Living Standards Measurements Study – Integrated Surveys in Agriculture (LSMS-ISA) from Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, Nigeria and Uganda, the paper finds that a household’s migration decision is based not only on its well-being status, but also on the position of the household relative to the wealth distribution in the local community. Results indicate that relative deprivation of wealth was positively associated with migration, implying a need to renew the discussion of relative deprivation and social inequality as a cause of migration in sub-Saharan Africa.

Among ecosystems services, freshwater is one of the most fundamental for life. For smallholders, water means the difference between a decent life and poverty, hunger and malnutrition.

A pesar de que en el último decenio el Perú ha hecho grandes avances en la reducción de la pobreza, disminuyendo significativamente la incidencia a nivel nacional de 42,4 % en 2004 a 20,7 % en 2015, para 2016 la brecha entre la pobreza rural y la urbana se había triplicado: 44 % versus 14 %. La desigualdad de ingresos en los hogares peruanos se mantuvo casi estática entre 2004 y 2015. Esta se refleja de manera más aguda en el acceso diferenciado de la población urbana y la rural a los servicios de educación, salud y financieros y a los activos productivos. 

In Indonesia’s eastern Maluku and North Maluku provinces, malnutrition levels are high. Nutrition challenges include monotonous diets with inadequate levels of energy, micronutrients and protein. Studies commissioned by IFAD suggest that strengthened value chains for foods such as bananas, cassava, maize, spinach, sweet potatoes and fish could make business sense for smallholders and lay the foundations for a strong local food system that sustainably delivers nutritious foods for healthy diets.

The goal was to improve the livelihoods of resource-poor farmers through the adoption of integrated crop–livestock conservation agriculture.

This How to Do Note (HTDN) is intended to provide guidance on how to design smallholder agriculture adaptation programmes that consider the differential impacts of climate change on women, men and youth smallholder farmers. This includes recognizing that programme interventions – from design to staffing to capacity development of beneficiaries and local organizations – need to consider how gender will affect sustainability and impact. The experiences, social positions and differing access to resources of marginalized populations are fundamental considerations in the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of gender transformative smallholder agriculture adaptation programmes.

Cameroon’s economy is mainly agriculture-based, with almost three quarters of the economically active population in rural areas employed in agricultural pursuits.
