Northern Areas Development Project

Northern Areas Development Project

Population pressure in this isolated area has led to degradation of resources such as rangeland and forest, and a subsequent decline in livelihoods for smallholder farmers, herders and landless people. Seasonal migration of men is on the rise, adding to the already heavy workload borne by women. The overall objective of the project is to raise incomes and improve food security for the target group of small-scale farmers, nomadic herders, landless people and women.

Specifically, the project works to boost crop and livestock production through improved natural resource management and better animal health. It provides irrigation and a water supply, improves local roads to improve market access, promotes credit schemes and strengthens regional agricultural support services.

The project has played a role in enlisting the support of local religious leaders for the empowerment of women.

This project is being re-designed in response to the earthquake crisis.
