With increased conflict in Mali over the last few days, more farmers are abandoning their fields and millions face hunger. It is against this backdrop of a rapidly escalating crisis across the Sahel that Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, President of the Republic of Mali will address journalists immediately following the opening of the International Fund for Agricultural Development  (IFAD) annual meeting of Member States on 11 February.

The Sahel region has been a frontline in the war against Islamist militancy for almost a decade. This has been further exacerbated by violent conflicts between herders and pastoralists who fight over precious resources limited by climate change. As the population in the region is set to double over the next 20 years, growing enough food for everyone will become increasingly difficult.

To address these issues and the role long-term development can play in addressing them, the President of Mali will be joined by Dominik Ziller, Director-General International Development Policy, German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and Gilbert F. Houngbo, IFAD President.
