The Platform for Agricultural Risk Management (PARM) is an initiative focused on making risk management an integral part of policy planning and implementation in the agricultural sector. An outcome of the G8 and G20 discussions on food security and agricultural growth, is a four year multi-donor partnership between the European Commission (EC), the French Development Agency (AFD), the Italian Development Cooperation (DGCS), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), German cooperation (BMZ/KfW), NEPAD and the development partners.
As a knowledge broker and coordinator, PARM facilitates the identification, assessment, quantification and management of agricultural risks in partner countries. PARM partners with relevant service providers to develop strategies to tackle those risks that can be managed and to facilitate the incorporation of such strategies into public policies, private sector practices and agricultural investment programmes of partner countries.
For its first phase, which started in December 2013, PARM focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, partnering with eight countries, and with the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD). As such, PARM contributes to NEPAD’s Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), which aims at supporting sustainable agriculture growth and improved food security in Africa. It does so by providing evidence on Agricultural Risks and Agricultural Risk Management tools in its partner countries, and by working with the governments to integrate the holistic approach to agricultural risk management into national plans and policies.
