Third Rural Infrastructure Development Project

Third Rural Infrastructure Development Project

This seven-year project built on the success of two previous projects – the Southwest Rural Development Project and the North-West Rural Development Project. It focused on 13 districts and reached 25 million rural poor people.

The project accelerated agricultural and non-farm economic and social development in the 13 project districts and improved basic rural transport and trading infrastructure, to help reduce poverty. It strengthened local people's participation in the planning, implementation and maintenance of infrastructure works. It provided direct employment and created income-generating opportunities in farm and non-farm sectors for rural poor people, particularly women

The project's activities included development of the rural road network, improvement of local markets and boat loading areas, adversity-response initiatives and development of people’s participation, and institutional development and project support.
