South Rohri Fresh Groundwater Irrigation Project

South Rohri Fresh Groundwater Irrigation Project

The area has an arid climate that makes agricultural development difficult. Existing groundwater irrigation systems have not been properly maintained, which is a further impediment to productivity. Most of the households in the area practiced subsistence farming. The main objective of the project was to increase the availability of water for irrigation and improve drainage and water management over about 152,000 ha of cultivable land. It also aimed to extend the irrigation systems to make more land productive.

Farmers reported substantial increases in yields and cropping intensity. Improvements in water management systems had a lasting, positive impact on the environment by helping prevent salinization and waterborne diseases.
