Second Artisanal Fisheries Development Project

Second Artisanal Fisheries Development Project

This was the second phase of the Artisanal Fisheries Development Project, IFAD’s first project in the country. In this phase the project’s objectives were to:

  • increase incomes and improve the living conditions of artisanal fishers
  • support the establishment of a resource management policy
  • develop fishers’ associations and service providers, and establish a financial mechanism to ensure the viability of the artisanal fishing subsector
  • consolidate the productive potential achieved in the first phase of the project

Activities included support for distribution and storage centres, and further support in the form of a line of credit. The project contributed to efforts to draw up a development plan for the fisheries sector. It also provided fishers with training in improved methods and support for their associations, particularly for women’s groups.
