Northwestern Province Area Development Project - Phase II

Northwestern Province Area Development Project - Phase II

This project was the second phase of the earlier Northwestern Province Area Development Project. In this phase the project built on the institutional capacity and infrastructure established during the first phase, and it was designed on the basis of a better understanding of target group needs and how to address them. The main objective was to assist a larger number of rural poor people, especially subsistence-level farmers and households headed by women, by helping raise income levels and improve food security and nutritional levels. This was to be achieved by:

  • promoting changes in the institutional framework and building capacity to encourage more sustainable economic development
  • continuing the National Biological Control Programme for pest control
  • mobilizing community organizations and communication development support
  • promoting agricultural development through research and agricultural extension services and by providing farm supplies and credit
  • encouraging the development of small-scale rural enterprises
  • improving road infrastructure
