Fisheries Development Project

• contribute to household and national food security
• alleviate rural poverty and increase the fishery sector's contribution to the national economy.

The target group consists of poor artisanal fishers using boats and canoes, foot fishers, women, young people, returning internally displaced people and demobilized soldiers. The target group is located around Assab and Massawa and the 70 villages along the Red Sea coast. Particular attention will be paid to enabling woman-headed households (around 30 per cent of the population) to participate in the project and to supporting young people keen to undertake fishing but unable to purchase equipment.

The project will cooperate with fishing communities' elders and village development committees and with local organizations such as the National Union of Eritrean Women and the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students to mobilize the target groups. It will also build on community traditions of support for the vulnerable to identify households most in need.
