Smallholder Fertilizer Project

Smallholder Fertilizer Project

The severance of traditional routes to Mozambican ports, as well as funding difficulties and rising costs, led to the breakdown of fertilizer supplies for Malawi’s farmers. The lack of fertilizer became a serious threat to the government’s National Rural Development Programme, and it put the food security of small-scale farmers at risk.

The principal objective of the project was to improve fertilizer delivery to benefit the majority of Malawi’s small-scale farmers, and it provided a vital contribution to sustaining fertilizer supplies on a national scale. The project included:

  • a Smallholder Fertilizer Revolving Fund, to be used exclusively to finance fertilizer imports for small-scale farmers for the duration of the project
  • technical assistance such as transport management, agricultural planning and pricing
