Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project

Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project

Small farmers account for much of the production of livestock, including pigs and poultry. All household members are responsible for the animals, but their care is mainly in the hands of women and children. The principal problem facing livestock owners is livestock disease, which is particularly serious where small livestock are the principal source of cash for the purchase of rice for family needs.

The objective of the project was to achieve sustainable improvements in agricultural productivity and rural incomes. IFAD investments specifically promoted the development of private veterinary services for pig and poultry farmers to reduce livestock mortality and disease. The project trained veterinarians and strengthened the capacity of animal health services.

The pilot project was intended as forerunner of a nationwide programme that would pave the way for sustained growth in the agricultural sector.
