Costa Rica - Country Strategy Note

The Country Strategy Note will have a two-year duration (2022-2024) and will explore possible collaborations in the priority areas jointly identified by the Government of Costa Rica and IFAD.

IFAD's goal is to contribute to improving the well-being of Costa Rica's rural population living in the most vulnerable conditions and to share successful experiences in poverty reduction with other countries in the region. This will be achieved by strengthening the capacities of small producers and promoting innovations that contribute to improved livelihoods and resilience.

The strategy comprises two strategic objectives:

  • Strategic Objective 1: Support the most vulnerable rural people to increase their effective engagement and participation through equitable and resilient agri-food systems using inclusive rural development programmes with a nature-based solutions approach.
  • Strategic objective 2: Promote the transfer of knowledge, good practices and lessons learned generated in Costa Rica to developing countries, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, in the areas of agriculture, nutrition, payments for ecosystem services and sustainable management of natural resources through South-South and triangular cooperation mechanisms.
