Agricultural Sector Support Project

The project was national in scope, and its obective was to improve the  production of the small-scale farmers who comprised 90 per cent of producers. Under the project, IFAD carried out direct investment activities in the Magbosi, Eastern and Northern Integrated Agricultural Development Project (IADP) areas.

The target group constituted more than 95 per cent of Sierra Leone 's farmers. The aim of the project was to improve their agricultural production by helping them reorganize agricultural services and gain improved access to increased production inputs.

The project supported improvements such as:

  • reorganization of government bodies and financial and accounting systems
  • extension activities and integration of research and training
  • privatization of enterprises
  • financial services through a rural credit bank
  • technical assistance
  • an agricultural development fund
  • improved access to agricultural inputs
