Family Sector Livestock Development Programme

Family Sector Livestock Development Programme

The objective of this programme is to increase livestock production throughout the country and boost the incomes of smallholder farmers. The programme introduces poultry and small ruminants among smallholder households and also encourages farmers to keep larger animals, where possible. It also supports livestock disease control and surveillance throughout the country. Women, who are generally responsible for smaller animals, are an important part of the target group. The programme is applied nationwide, with community-level capacity building concentrated in 52 administrative districts. Activities include:

  • broadening the network of trained assistance to help farmers improve the care and management of their livestock
  • helping communities manage distribution of basic animal health equipment
  • building capacity in the private sector to supply and meet the needs of smallholders
  • building capacity in the public sector to provide training to farmers and communities in maintaining animal health
