Lead Adviser to the Associate Vice President
Shantanu Mathur is the Lead Adviser to the Associate Vice President of the Programme Management Department and Manager of the UN Rome-based Agencies' Partnerships. His functions include management of the secretariat of the PMD Management Team. He also manages the team responsible for the corporate cross cutting priority for nutrition.
Mathur has operational and managerial experience in the area of pro-poor rural development for over 32 years – at FAO, WB and IFAD. He led the IFAD Grants Secretariat, the Secretariat of IFAD’s Operations Steering Committee, which was chaired by the IFAD President, and was Head of the Quality Assurance Group, led by the Vice President. He has championed the cause of investment in Research for Development including several outstanding grant-financed initiatives contributing to IFAD’s leadership in the global Agricultural Research for Development community. He had led several institution-building initiatives, including establishing the Global Forum for Agricultural Research (GFAR, 1994); and International Centres of Excellence, such as INBAR (the first and only international research organisation based in mainland China (1997).
Outside of IFAD, Mathur is currently the co-Chair of the Global Donor Platform on Rural Development (GDPRD). He served on various CGIAR governing bodies including the CGIAR Fund Council Chair of the Evaluation and Impact Assessment Committee; Vice-Chair of the CGIAR Finance Committee and Vice Chair of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR). Mathur holds Masters' Degrees in Economics, University of Cambridge, UK, and in Business Economics, University of New Delhi.
