Sophie Grigson on how diversifying crops in Malawi cultivates sustainability and resilience

Maize is vital to Malawi's agricultural landscape: it is the primary source of sustenance for many small-scale farmers and a crucial source of income. However, overreliance on maize has left rural communities vulnerable to the effects of climate change, including erratic rainfall patterns, soil erosion and land degradation. 

In response to these threats, the IFAD-funded TRADE programme encourages farmers to diversify their crops by cultivating native vegetables, like pumpkin and amaranth, and to use sustainable farming methods, such as backyard gardening and drip irrigation. 

IFAD Recipes for Change chef Sophie Grigson travelled to Malawi to meet local small-scale farmers, document their experience with crop diversification and learn traditional recipes.
