Women are protagonists of change in Nicaragua’s rural areas19 October 2021
One after another, women who received support from the NICAVIDA project, repeat like a mantra: “I’m a protagonist”.
Since its onset in 2016, the Nicaraguan Dry Corridor Rural Family Sustainable Development Project, or NICAVIDA, a partnership between IFAD and Nicaragua’s Minister of Ministry of Family, Communitarian, Cooperative and Associative Economy (MEFCCA), has benefitted 30,000 families. More than 60 per cent of the project participants are women, a percentage that goes beyond the initial project target regarding gender equality and women empowerment. This is evidence that Nicaraguan women have indeed taken a protagonist role in their communities’ change and improvement processes. They have taken ownership of the project and created opportunities for improving their own lives and those of their communities. This video is about the stories of brave, hard-working, capable and audacious women who are decisively contributing to the living of their households.
