Southern Roseires Agricultural Development Project

Southern Roseires Agricultural Development Project

Smallholder farming families and some fishing households and herders in the project area are among the poorest people in Sudan. Their livelihoods have been threatened by the introduction of large mechanized farms nearby, and they have struggled against declining yields and increasingly high costs.

The project’s aim was to help them increase agricultural production, income and food self-sufficiency by providing them with mechanized systems, credit and other farm support services and by introducing an environmentally sound system of cropping. The project incorporated lessons learned from previous IFAD experiences, particularly those promoting village cooperative societies.
