IFAD and European Space Agency use spatial technology to better serve the world’s poorest rural food producers

Rome, 23 June 2023 – As current global crises converge, business as usual will not suffice. Leveraging innovation and new partnerships has become increasingly important as world leaders search for new ways to tackle hunger, poverty and the growing impacts of climate change.

On 28 June, new approaches to partnership will be on full display at the 2023 IFAD Innovation Day in Rome. Media are invited to attend the full day of events as well as a press coffee at 17:15 in person or virtually.

The UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will share how new and strengthened partnerships with the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Institute of Innovation for Sustainability, the World Food Programme Innovation Accelerator and Global Action are coming together to impact global food security.

IFAD and ESA will unveil their plans to support vulnerable small-scale farmers in eight developing countries, to improve food production, adapt to climate change, and enhance resilience to economic and climate shocks.

IFAD's Innovation Day 2023 will showcase progress, opportunities, and areas where strategic partnerships and co-financing can scale up innovation for impoverished rural populations. A marketplace will feature innovative solutions financed by IFAD, delivering sustainable and inclusive rural development outcomes.

The event is jointly organized by IFAD, the only UN Agency that specializes in rural development, Cariplo Factory, an innovation hub company, Global Action and the Fund for Innovation in Development. It is supported by the governments of Colombia, Finland, France, Germany and Norway. The event media partner is Adnkronos.
